Central Ohio Balloon Club

The "Central Ohio Balloon Club " was established in 1982 for hot air balloon pilots, crew and enthusiasts. COBC offers fun, fellowship, and education to it’s members. COBC promotes interest in hot air ballooning to the general public, non-ballooning groups, law enforcement, and safety organizations. We actively participate in community events, and hot air balloon rallies across the United States.  COBC always welcomes new members and fellow balloonists.

EVERYONE IS WELCOME!

The Purpose of the Central Ohio Balloon Club

1. To promote an interest in hot air ballooning, and to encourage an exchange of information among the membership, general public, and other ballooning organizations.*
2. To increase knowledge by conducting a continuing education program concerning hot air ballooning.
3. To promote safe and responsible ballooning.
4. To maintain an ongoing relationship with the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration), and to become aware of changes in both ballooning and overall aviation regulations.
5. To promote fellowship among balloonists.
6. To work to raise the public's awareness of the sport and science of hot air ballooning.*
7. To encourage individual membership in the BFA (
Balloon Federation of America).

* The Central Ohio Balloon Club actively supports the Ohio Farm Bureau Federation by making a yearly donation to the Darwin Bryan Scholarship Fund.

Toward these ends,
COBC meets monthly at 7:30 pm (social hour and snacks at 7:00 pm). The meetings and membership are open to all persons interested in learning about hot air ballooning.

While the membership includes pilots and student pilots, the majority are balloon crew members, or individuals who are simply interested in balloons and enjoy being around them.

Many crew for one or more pilots. A balloon crew is usually made up of three to five individuals who assist in the launching of the balloon, follow it during flight, and assist in the landing and recovery. Crew members work very hard, but also have a lot of fun. A balloon "chase" is a sport in itself.

A crew member usually earns balloon rides and may receive flight instruction and earn his or her pilot's license.
